2026 World Cup Draw Rules Explained
The draw follows strict official FIFA regulations to ensure a fair and balanced tournament. Our simulator is the
best tool to visualize these rules.
1. Host Nations
- USA – pre‑assigned to Group D
- Mexico – pre‑assigned to Group A
- Canada – pre‑assigned to Group B
2. Confederation Limits
- Maximum two UEFA teams per group.
- All other confederations may have at most one team per group.
3. Top‑4 Seeded Teams (Quarter Separation & Halving)
The four highest‑ranked teams (Spain, Argentina, France, England) must each occupy a different quarter of the
bracket:
- Quarter 1 – Groups E, F, I
- Quarter 2 – Groups G, H
- Quarter 3 – Groups C, L
- Quarter 4 – Groups J, K
Additionally, the halving rule requires:
- Spain (rank 1) and Argentina (rank 2) must be placed in opposite halves of the bracket.
- France (rank 3) and England (rank 4) must also be in opposite halves.
4. Pot Allocation
Teams are divided into four pots based on FIFA rankings and confederation balance. The draw proceeds pot by pot,
respecting the constraints above.
5. How the Simulator Enforces These Rules
The app uses a deterministic algorithm for the top‑4 seeds during batch draws (Fill Pot / Fill All) and a live
validation check for manual and step‑by‑step draws.
